About the Theme
Healthy communities are a core aim of the San Diego County Promotores Coalition. Healthy communities are those with the expertise and knowledge to access health services and resources creating a community conducive to health. This year’s conference focuses on the unification of Promotores and Community Health Workers (CHWs) in creating and maintaining healthy communities. How do we create healthy communities? Invest in Promotores and CHWs. Promotores and CHWs are effective in educating and linking community members to health resources and services. To create healthy communities we must create health systems that look beyond the clinic, reach individuals where they are in a way that is culturally competent to overcome barriers preventing communities from reaching their full health potential.

All Hands in: Strategies for Community Outreach | In this fast-paced world, we have only a limited time to capture people’s attention. There are many things we can do as CHWs to capture and maintain people’s attention. In this workshop, we will explore and share best practices for health education delivery. As the title suggests, be ready for an all-hands-on-deck, interactive conversation about what we all can do to be more effective, creative and engaging when delivering health education messages in the community. | Spanish |
Community Health Workers Organizing an Effective Campaign Using PhotoVoice | Effective advocacy is just as influential as service delivery for promoting health equity, especially when key decisions are rarely driven by the actual health and safety priorities of the most vulnerable communities. Promotores, as the link between the community and health and social services, carry the potential to make changes that directly impact the community. Promotores know the health concerns of our communities and are the key to meaningful, intergenerational community engagement that generates resilience. In this workshop, participants will learn about efforts from promotores in northern San Diego County and how they have made systemic policy advances driven by community health. Participants will have the opportunity to form an effective PhotoVoice campaign plan that includes intergenerational promotores, community members and other stakeholders to prioritize and improve health for all. Participants will be able to adapt the tools to their needs and to the context of their work. | English |
Working on Social Determinants of Health: Core Competency for Promotores | Promotores are an asset to the community because they bring an understanding of the languages, cultures, and lived experiences from the communities they serve. Their skills provide a unique and impactful contribution towards efforts to improve health outcomes. There is extensive evidence indicating that promotores play an important role in improving community health. As health care landscape changes, there is an opportunity to improve community health by addressing the social conditions that impact people’s health, often referred to as the social determinants of health (SDoH). In this workshop, participants will learn about the SDoH and how they can play a role in addressing health from a different perspective. | Spanish |
Health Prevention Strategies in the Community: Agents of Health | This workshop covers best practices of Community Workshops for Health Promotion (TCPS) implemented through the Institute of the Secretariat of Health of Baja California in Mexico. Participants will learn a variety of educational strategies aimed at people, families, groups and communities according to age, sex, life event and epidemiological situation, whose purpose is to contribute to the development of knowledge and skills at an individual level and collectively that preserve, protect and improve biopsychosocial health. In addition, these community workshops aim to protect, maintain and improve the health of the population, as well as contribute to the generation of conditions that favor it through the modification or transformation of social determinants of health. | Spanish |
How to Achieve Success When Communication Styles Clash | Participants will learn from Sylvia Melena, leadership author, speaker, trainer, consultant, and former Assistant Deputy Director for the County of San Diego’s Self-Sufficiency Programs. Participants will learn how to recognize the characteristics of each DISC behavioral/communication style; identify their own behavioral/communication style and the behavioral/communication styles of others based on reading verbal and nonverbal cues; and develop and practice thoughtful and deliberative adaptability for improving communication. | English |
Empowerment through Community Mobilization | This workshop will examine the power of community mobilization as it pertains to promotores. Using concrete examples, strategies, and interactive activities, we will engage in dialogues with participants on how community mobilization can help address health and safety disparities throughout San Diego County. As grassroots leaders in their own communities, promotores can draw from their own experiences and knowledge to build strategic partnerships and catalyze community mobilization. As participants learn together, they will also be able to share their own challenges in trying to use community mobilization tools for the empowerment of their respective communities. ¡Si se Puede! | Spanish |

Queso Fresco: What You Need to Know to Keep our Community Healthy | Queso Fresco is popular in Latino cultures, but it is often made with raw milk, which may contain harmful bacteria that can cause illnesses, especially among pregnant women, children, the elderly and individuals who have a compromised immune system. This cheese is often sold at small markets, sold door-to-door or given as a gift among friends and family. At this Queso Fresco workshop, participants will learn about the health risks of eating this type of cheese, the populations that are most affected, how to identify cheese that is safe to eat, and how to communicate with the community about this important topic. | Spanish |
The Risk of Overuse and Misuse of Antibiotics | Antibiotic resistance is a growing global problem. The overuse and misuse of antibiotics are the main driving force behind this threat. Each year in the U.S., at least 2 million people get an antibiotic‐resistant infection, and at least 23,000 people die. Antibiotic resistance has the potential to affect people at any stage of life and from any socio‐economic background. There are currently several nationwide campaigns urging doctors to stop over-prescribing antibiotics. It is also important to engage community health champions, such as promotores, who can then share information with their communities and increase awareness of antibiotic resistance and proper antibiotic use. This workshop is intended to inform promotores/Community Health Workers about the risks of antibiotic resistance and best practices for reducing risks. | Spanish |
Opioid Misuse and Addiction: Strategies for Community Health Workers | In this workshop, participants will focus on understanding what opioids are and how they are impacting our communities; exploring the environmental factors contributing to opioid misuse; and recognizing signs of opioid misuse and addiction. Participants will be able to learn skills that can help protect the safety of those struggling with opioid addiction. | English |
Poisonous Beauty: The Dangers of Mercury in Face Creams | Do you know someone who uses a handmade facial cream without a brand label? Or a Mexican spot‐remover cream to lighten the skin? These creams can contain the toxic metal mercury and be poisonous. In this session, we will talk about which face creams are suspect, how to prevent mercury poisoning from face creams, and how to work with our communities to increase awareness of, reduce the sales of, and offer healthier alternatives to these dangerous face creams. | Spanish |
Understanding and Assisting Victims of Domestic Violence | This interactive workshop will cover victims’ rights and Marsy’s Law; victim services, including advocacy, crisis intervention, needs assessments, dos and don’ts, and navigating the criminal justice system; and resources and referrals, including information about the State of California Victim Compensation Board and other agencies that provide services to domestic violence victims. The workshop will be structured around case studies and discussions. | English |
Mental Health & Trauma-Informed Care for Migrant Populations | Although migration is a natural phenomenon, it is a complex process that involves not only crossing geographic borders but also crossing interpersonal, cultural and socioeconomic borders. Migration thus has deep physical and psychological impacts on individuals. Community leaders, community health workers, clinicians, and health centers in the field are working to provide integrated mental and behavioral health care using practices and language that are supportive of the patient’s personal experiences and that address the complex social, cultural, economic, and justice factors that contribute to disease burden. This session will explore mental health along a continuum of care. It will provide an overview of the different stages of the migratory cycle, the psychological impact of migration, the specific stressors that migrants experience, Ulysses Syndrome, and the role of trauma‐informed care. This session will provide participants with new ways of thinking about trauma, behavioral health, and possible interventions. | Spanish |

Living the 5210 Message – Making Healthy Habits Easy! | Let’s make creating lifelong healthy habits easy! This workshop will focus on fostering a positive attitude toward change for a healthier lifestyle. It will educate participants on the 5210 healthy lifestyle message and provide strategies to easily incorporate and share the message as both role models and educators for the communities they serve. The 5210 message has been promoted by the Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista Well‐Being Center at both elementary and high schools through interactive workshops to increase physical activity, healthier eating, and reduce recreational screen time use. | English |
Gratitude | Being grateful is perhaps one of the most important ingredients to being happy. When we are grateful, even for the small things in life, the body, the mind, and the heart work in perfect harmony. This workshop will help you understand the importance of the connection that exists between gratitude and emotional health. Thankfulness contributes to the proper functioning of the brain by causing the brain to release large amounts of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps us continue cultivating gratitude, and serotonin, which is known as “the happiness hormone” and produces feelings of happiness. Learning to value what you have is an art that must be developed every day and in every moment. Learning to be thankful and to find the good things in life will benefit your emotional health. | Spanish |
The Importance of Emotional Intelligence in Parenting Styles | How many times has your life been affected by your emotional state? Generally, when a challenge arises in which you have to make a decision, it triggers a fight between the heart and the mind. Usually, in this fight, impulse always wins. That is, emotion ends up dominating, causing an aggressive reaction that can subsequently bring unpleasant consequences and regrets. This reaction then comes off of as revealing a poor control of emotions and an inability to understand and manage them It’s usually because we do not stop and take the time to reflect on and understand what we are feeling and why we are feeling a certain way. As a result, we do not know the adequate way to channel them. We develop the ability to manage emotions throughout our life, but it begins with our nuclear family. In this workshop, we will examine the different styles of parenting used at home and how to use emotional intelligence to promote greater personal growth and development in each family member. | Spanish |
It’s Difficult Being a Woman | Join me in this workshop to learn to recognize the symptoms of depression and talk about the impact of depression on us and our family. Together we will explore the events in our lives that have led us to become the person we are today. We will work together to learn to love ourselves for who we are and to give ourselves the time we deserve. Come to remember how beautiful you are and the number of virtues that you offer. If we want to see a change in our environment, we must start with ourselves first! | Spanish |
What is the Role of the Father and Mother in the Family? | Do you know how important of a role the father and mother have? Have you noticed that what you experienced during your childhood continues to be reflected in your current life? Before children reach 2 to 3 years of age, they are unable to distinguish between “I” and “the other.” Their concept of self is fused to their mother and they see the world through the feelings and emotions of their mother. We continuously project what we experience during our childhood onto our family and our current relationships. Our parents were once children too and often treat their children similarly to how they were treated as children. The mother gives us protection and allows us to integrate into the world and form connections with people. The father introduces us to reality and allows us to experience the outside world and become an individual. | English |
Keys to Healthy Relationships | When we realize that the people around us are different, and when we stop blaming them or expecting them to make us happy, we begin to develop healthier relationships in our lives. We will analyze five vital keys to developing healthy relationships with our spouse, children, family, coworkers, etc. The workshop will emphasize acceptance, communication, boundaries, love and respect, and forgiveness. | Spanish |
